The Magic of Molting

Molting is one of the most miraculous—and delicate—stages in a hermit crab's life. At The Lucky Crab Co., we are passionate about educating owners so you can provide a safe, enriching environment during this time of growth or repair. Finding out beforehand how a molt is supposed to go can save you a lot of time and worry!

The Molt Sac & Vital Preparation

Before shedding, a hermit crab builds up a small molt sac on one side of its abdomen to store essential nutrients. To prepare, they require access to a proper mix of fresh and saltwater, which they store inside their shells to facilitate the shedding process. They will continuously wear their shell throughout the entire molt.

The Molting Timeline & Vulnerability

The molting process can take anywhere from one short week to an entire year, depending on the crab's size and age. During the molt, they become completely immobilized. This temporary paralysis makes them highly vulnerable; an ant infestation or a terrarium flood can quickly become fatal. Providing a secure, perfectly controlled environment is essential.

Surface Molting vs. Buried Molting

Most crabs will bury themselves deep in the substrate to molt safely in a dark, protected hole. However, surface molting occasionally happens and is a much faster process. If your hermit crab molts on the surface, they still need extreme peace, quiet, and isolation to get through the process without stress or interference.

The Exoskeleton & Dangerous Diet Risks

Once the old exoskeleton is shed, your crab must eat it to absorb the calcium needed to harden its new body. Sadly, many commercial pet industry pellets contain toxic preservatives that suppress their appetite and do not give them a varied diet, which can cause issues, such as poor molts, limb loss, and in some cases, cannibalism. These poor diets will also build up toxins in the crab's exoskeleton, making it toxic to consume.
